Timothy Johns

Computer Science

Sophomore @ University of Michigan - Ann Arbor

About Me

Background / Bio
Hi! My name is Timothy Johns, and I am currently a sophomore studying computer science at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. On campus, I am involved in two project teams where I work as a software developer and a project manager. My interests lie in delving into the math behind machine learning libraries as well as learning more about embedded systems. This summer, I will be interning as a machine learning intern at a local company in my hometown. One of my passions that I have recently discovered over the past two years is teaching. Having the right teacher or mentor can change the way someone sees a skill, academic major, or career path. Last summer, I had the opportunity to work as a Python instructor where I taught middle schooler and high schoolers the fundamentals of programming. It was a valuable experience for me as I learned the proper ways to engage a student in a concept or guide them through a challenging problem or code bug. Apart from academics and projects, I enjoy playing chess, soccer, and guitar in my spare time.

What I would offer to prospective mentees?
As a mentor, I hope that my mentees will have a smooth transition into college from high school and have more knowledge on what they what want to pursue as a career path and how to pursue it. As a high school senior who had no prior programming experience, I went into college with little knowledge on how to be involved in student orgs, or knowing how to write a well-written resume, or applying to the right internships. I hope to impart useful information to my mentees so that they will be better prepared for their major as well as adapting to the college life whether it be the academic or social life.

Through Mentora, I'm committed to transforming the way students plan their educational and professional futures, making informed decision-making the norm, not the exception.
